Client's brief

Klimahaus Bremerhaven is an innovative museum that takes visitors on an immersive journey through the captivating subjects of weather, climate, and climate change. Transcending conventional museum experiences, it stands as a beacon of climate knowledge, offering a dynamic blend of education and entertainment ('edutainment').

Heatwaves, flooding, storms, and torrential rain… Extreme weather conditions are occurring more frequently worldwide, forcing us to experience climate change up close and personal.

The immersive, multisensory Wetterextreme experience is designed to educate visitors about the formation of weather extremes, why their frequency is increasing due to global warming, and how we can best adapt to them.

Our solution

In partnership with our long-standing collaborators, visual effects content production studio Moonraker VFX, Sarner was brought onboard to help bring to life the initial concepts developed by creative agency studio klv.

A central element of the experience is a ride platform that takes visitors on an immersive flight through various extreme weather scenarios across three floors of the museum building. Up to 40 visitors at a time can experience the eight-metre 'Uplift,' which immerses them in 360-degree multisensory environments featuring scenes of extreme heat, drought, forest fire, heavy rain and flooding, cyclones, and hurricanes.

While the ride experience delves into the meteorological fascination of weather extremes, the broader exhibition focuses on their impacts and our actions. As visitors traverse the globe, they engage with individuals from various cultures who share their personal experiences of how climate shapes their daily lives. Through these intimate encounters, visitors gain a deeper understanding of the profound impact climate has on communities worldwide.

Each step of the journey promises a sensory adventure. Through seamless integration of stage design, film, kinetics, sound, and special effects - including water screens, hail, mist, lasers, and smoke - the experience fully immerses visitors in a multisensory exploration of diverse weather extremes. A pivotal aspect of the project is the intricate synchronisation of media content with the ride’s dynamic movement, ensuring a truly captivating and immersive adventure.

At the heart of the experience is a bold vision to immerse visitors in the forces of nature, inspire curiosity, and ignite a passion for environmental conservation and climate action. Each encounter with the natural elements is both thrilling and thought-provoking, encouraging visitors to consider their role in the changes happening to our Earth's climate.

Visitors will laugh, marvel, and perhaps even shed a tear while exploring the complex dynamics of our planet's climate. It is an experience that transcends boundaries, inviting visitors of all ages to embark on a journey of discovery and enlightenment.
